Making the Best of Your Image

Let’s get started with some lessons that will teach you the basics of how to use Photoshop.

Knowing how to create a new file from scratch will be useful when you are ready to design a new logo, create a digital flyer, or create any number of projects.

Creating a New File

Most Photoshop files are saved in either.psd or.psdx file formats. These file types are popular among many designers and graphic artists because they create the file size required to see the entire image file in your Web browser as well as in a program, such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign. This is important for me because I prefer to work with my graphics at full size because I can change the file size to suit my needs, whereas in smaller file formats, I can’t.

This section steps you through the process of creating a new Adobe Photoshop image.

1. Choose File⇒New to create a new document or file. The New Document dialog box opens (refer to Figure 2-1).

Note: For more on how to use the New Document dialog box, see Chapter 1.

2. Choose PSD from the File Format drop-down menu on the left.

The Open dialog box opens (refer to Figure 2-1). As you can see, there is a large selection of graphics formats available to you, but Photoshop supports.psd,.psdx, and.psd7 files.

3. Open the desired format for your file by clicking the format of your choice from the File Type drop-down menu.

The default format is.psd, which is the most popular..psdx,.psd7, and other formats are more appropriate for high-resolution printing or making print files. A range of file sizes for.psd files is listed in the dialog box.

4. Preview your file before saving. I like to do this before I save to ensure I have the right file size. If you need more space, change the file size by resizing your image or using a different resizing option.

5. To save, choose File⇒

Shapes make it easier for us to create and edit objects. Using a shape file, you can easily create a new photo, clip an object from a picture, or resize an image.

To create a shape file in Photoshop, use the File→Create→Shape Layer menu option, which will open the dialog box shown in the following figure.

Click the Shape Type drop-down menu and select Topographic Map, as shown in the following figure.

Enter the name of your shape in the Shape Name box, as shown in the following figure.

Click OK to confirm your selections.

After you place your shape file, you’ll see that it becomes a layer in the Layers panel.

To edit your shape in Photoshop, simply double-click its name in the Layers panel.

Zoom in to the map using the Zoom In command on the menu bar.

Open the Zoom tool by clicking its icon or pressing the Z key.

Place your cursor over your shape, and the mouse pointer will change to a text cursor. To create a new object, simply click and drag.

The mouse cursor will change to a crosshair (see the following figure). Drag to create the shape, and release the mouse button to place it.

If you want to move your shape, grab and hold the shape (it will be selected in the Layers panel) and move it where you want it.

The Shape dialog box appears. This allows you to modify the shape.

Click the « Fill » button.

The Fill dialog box appears.

Click a color from the color well. Click the arrow above the color well to open the drop-down menu, and select a custom color.
