The original SteamWorld was a game I never thought would live on the long term, yet it was also the game that started it all. It was the first game by Image & Form Games that could be played from a creative perspective. People started imitating the gameplay, I guess my game had gotten a lot of attention! So I guess it was time to make a sequel, an improved game with added features. Luckily, the sequel was easier to make than the first. A lot of the things in the original were just a curiosity, such as the moving parts of the robots, the fact that they’re floating around in the world. There was also the fact that the first game had been for mobile devices, so it was harder to get into the game. I also started out that the game was more a puzzle game than a platformer. We didn’t make a game that looked like Super Mario Bros., but a game where you had to make the same kind of decisions as in a puzzle game. A game where you had to solve puzzles to get to the next level. To do this, we added a hub world where you could talk to the robots and get rewards. As a result, more and more of the game was a puzzle game, the puzzle game had become a platformer. This made the development easier, but I was still only making small progress at a time. We started selling the game and people started buying it, it became a real business for us. We still had a small game team, so we had to do some restructuring. In order to keep the game going, I needed to split the game in more parts, and that’s how SteamWorld Heroes was born. We made a rough version of the game and had a lot of fun making it. The game was fun and we had a lot of fans, so we decided to make more games based on SteamWorld, and here we are today! I hope you enjoy playing the game, I’ve been working on it for nearly a year now, and it feels great to have a finished game!
